A week or so ago was world breast feeding week. As usual I’v come late to the party but I wanted to do a Breastfeeding 101 post. This advice is what works for me and is probably different to what a medical professional would tell you. It is my advice, take it or leave and do what you feel is right, you will always know best!
So here are my tips:
*Educate yourself as much as possible on breastfeeding. Understand the benefits to both of you, what a good latch looks like, what you can and can’t eat while breastfeeding. (I eat pretty much everything, although I don’t drink a lot of caffeine, or eat anything raw. I have had rare steak though! I also try steer away from curry because Lily really doesnt sleep as well when I have had anything spicy.)
* Trust yourself and your baby. You KNOW how to do it! If you didn’t, humans would have died out years ago. Although it is not instictual, and certainly requires a lot of practice! Evolution is on your side.
*Drink 3l of water everyday. Jungle juice (2l water, 1l fruit juice, 30mls berry elixir, a sachet of rehidrate and ten drops of rescue remedy per glass) works really well because it quenches your thirst which is a constant companion for the first 6 months. I have never been so thirsty before or since and was never without a water bottle in that time. *
I found Sudacream worked very well for cracked nipples but it must be wiped off before baby drinks which isn’t ideal when you are so sleep deprived that you can’t remember your own name!
* The first 8 weeks or so , it might be 6 weeks, your breastmilk isn’t ‘established’. This means that you have to work on it and keep your supply up. The best way to do this is let baby suck. Lock the breastpump in a cupboard and seriously try not express. If you really need to then manually express just to relieve the fullness, or express after baby has drank. Most moms fall into the trap of wanting to know how much baby is getting, so they express. The numbers are not important, if baby is weeing and pooing, putting on weight and happy, then baby is fine. Trust yourself to be able to feed your baby!
* Have a basket next to your usual nursing place filled with a water bottle, TV remote or a book, your cell phone, and a spoeg doek. YOure likely to be there a while in the beginning. Lily would sometimes drink for an hour at a time – she still would if I let her! So get yourself comfy!
* Eat white chocolate and take your preggy vits, I can HEAR Kim rolling her eyes at me when I say this but I swear it does work.
* Try relax, take it easy and enjoy this time. I only started enjoying breastfeeding from about 6 months, I constantly wanted to stop and I even gave Lily formula a few times and got advice on how to wean her! ITs not easy, the best advice I got was to carry on until the end of the month. Once I got to the end of the month, I’d say it again. And now a year down the line and I’m happy to let Lily self wean. I dread stopping actually!
I hope this post will help new moms or second time around moms who want to give breastfeeding a bash. ITs ok to not want to, or not be able to, seriously. But if you do really want to, then work at it and dont allow yourself to give up!
I never thought I’d have a daughter. I always thought I’d have boys because there are so many boys in Shauns family. I even said that I’ll keep my wedding dress so that one day maybe my daughter-in-law would like to wear it. I never thought I would be blessed with a daughter. And when the doctor said “its a girl” I was in happy shock. I was thrilled! When I went home I took out my box of special things that I had kept for just in case; one squirt of the perfume that I wore on my wedding day, my bracelet with my name on from when I was a baby, the tiara I wore to get married in and my special earrings (from my great grandmother) I sat and sobbed and laughed while looking at it, I was so happy! I know had a daughter to share it with! Everytime I look at that box now I want to cry again because I have a daughter!!! I have a gorgeous little girl who can dress up in my clothes, play in my make up and play with my hair. I have an amazing relationship with my mom and I’m so blessed to have a daughter now who I can have that relationship with.
I love you my Lily, you are so special to me!

…I sleep a lot less. And when I do sleep its usually with a baby foot tucked under my chin, or soft hair tickling my nose.
… I celebrate the small things. Like a 10 minute bath by myself, a baby who wakes up with a smile or a quick uninterrupted phone call.
…I weigh more and have battle scars. But I feel more beautiful and confident than ever. I now know what my body can do and thus respect it and love it.
…I dye my hair at home. Something I swore I would never do. But time and money make it a necessity.
…I very rarely bath alone and never sleep alone. I have always hated sleeping alone anyway so this is ok. Every night Lily and I bath together then Shaun takes her out and I bath alone for a little while. I look forward to it all day!
…I have less cocktail nights and more tea dates.
…I spend more time sitting on the floor with a baby playing besides me then I’ve ever spent in a gym.
…I do washing everyday. Who knew a baby could use so many clothes.
…I eat three meals a day. I eat when Lily eats and it makes me eat much healthier!
…I see dangers everywhere we go. The open plug point, the snappy dog, the slippery floor. Everything is a hazard to my precious girl.
…A trip to the grocery shop takes a well thought out plan.
…I discuss bowel movements with my husband. Not my own thankfully!!
…I spend less alone time with my husband, but love him more than ever.
…I talk to family, friends and the world less, but think of them all the time.
…I blog less, but have posts saved all over the place. I lie in bed thinking of them but don’t have the energy to write!
…I think of my little person first. Every time.
…I’m happier than I’ve ever been!
I love birthdays. Love love love them. Not just mine either. I get excited when its Shauns birthday as well, the whole week I feel excited and on his actual day I want to wake him at midnight and wish him Happy Birthday! I never do though because he doesn’t feel the same. I will definately do it with Lily though!
So in the run up to my birthday I had a few disappointments, my mom and brother were meant to be with me but life got in the way and neither could make it. Then my best friend down here and her boyfriend realized they were in Jhb for the weekend. Then my neighbour said she was away too! So my party plans slid out the window one by one. But you know what? I went on to have one of the best birthdays ever!
It started on Wednesday. Nelson Mandela day. Petria records Private Practice for me every week because its on to late for me to watch and she had 3 episodes for me to watch. So Lily and I went there early and sat and caught up! Petria had a client at 1.30 so once we had finished catching up on the drama of Addsions life we went and did our 67 mins (raiding our cupboards for clothes, blankets and linen and taking it to child welfare). We then popped back to her house to fetch her car and left together. Before I left she suggested we all go out for dinner that night (to Spur as that’s the most baby friendly place). We arranged to meet there at 6. As we were about to leave for dinner Shaun said he had gotten a message from Robbie (Petrias boyfriend) and they’re running late so we must go there for a drink first. I was getting edgy because Lily was hungry so wanted to go straight to Spur but Shaun insisted. We got to their house and they had a huge bunch of balloons, champagne and dinner cooked for me! Lasagne and chocolate souffles! It was such a stunning surprise and they were all in on it. I didn’t suspect a thing!
Thursday I made us mac and cheese, my second fave meal after lasagne and had a nice chilled day with my neighbour. We had tea and cupcakes and played with Lily and hung out.
Friday was my birthday and started with a message from my step mother. She was one of the first to message me, and as I’ve said before we have a bit of a stormy relationship. We are both making a big effort now though and its really paying off. I don’t think she reads my blog but, Vanida if you do, thank you. It meant a lot to me. Katherine and her little boy Liam came for lunch. She bought a bag of goodies, including home made brownies, presents and a surprise present from my mom! She had sent it with Kas so that I would have something to open on my birthday. Perfume that I have been wanting for ages! It was an amazing surprise, I have the best mom in the world! My dad called all the way from Paris and hinted about an awesome pressie, driving me mad. He ended up buying me a tablet, so so so awesome! Then Shaun popped in from work with a huge bouquet of flowers for me! Kas and I went for a walk and got frozen yogurt and spent the day playing with our little people and chatting. That night we got take out ribs and sat at home and watched movies. Simply perfect!
Saturday Lily and I had breakfast at circus Circus on the beach while Shaun surfed then we spent the day hanging out and playing in Lilys room.
Sunday we went to watch Freshly ground play at the Botanical gardens, it was amazing. A gorgeous day spent with amazing people!
Seriously one of the best birthdays ever! I got millions of messages and phone calls and I think it was probably the first time ever that no one forgot! I love you all, thank you for making my day so special!
